Introduces a session of the 28th International Congress of the History of Art (Berlin, 1992) dealing with the impact photography has had on the documentation, dissemination and study of art. Speakers and topics were: Anthony Hamber, "An overview of the photographic documentation of the visual arts, 1839-1880; " Claudio de Polo, "Alinari: a dynasty of photographers. From the origins of the photographic atelier to the industrial era, 1852-1890; " Alicia Faxon, "The photographic documentation and dissemination of the works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti; " and Friedrich Kestel, "The Arthur Kingsley Porter collection of photographs and the European preservation of monuments".
