Book about a number of paintings executed between 1700 and 1770 which appear to articulate a number of key issues in the moral philosophy of the day. Through a comparison of modes of discourse, Solkin attempts to demonstrate the growth of a realm called the public sphere in which the age-old antagonism between morality and commerce is reconciled through codes of gentility.
