Traces modern art therapy back to ideas first clearly enunciated in Hans Prinzhorn's Bildnerei der Geisteskranken (1922), which discussed the notion of art as an unmediated expression of the inner person. Discusses subsequent parallels between aesthetic and therapeutic theories that grew out of Prinzhorn's writings.
