Abstract
(en)
Most of the essays are based on papers delivered at a symposium held in 1989 at the Tate Gallery Liverpool, on the occasion of the exhibition Degas : images of women. The text also includes three unpublished or partly-published essays which amplify coverage of the subject. The text demonstrates the diversity of approaches and issues generated around the problematic material of Degas's images of women, combining art history, cultural theory and psychology. Introductory essays by the editors look at the context in which Degas's images of women were received, and analyse the challenge of feminism to the masculinist enterprise of art history.
