Abstract (en)
Reviews recent texts on Degas's pastels of women bathing which reflect the gender-specific problems of looking. Provides a psychoanalytic argument that Degas's working practices and studies of limbs and muscles under stress register a psychic projection, and one based on conflicts of class, gender and sexuality. Provides a close reading of a text written in 1919 by Alice Michel, one of Degas's models, which challenges the masculinist literature on the artist.
