Examines the structure of landlordism in London's East End from a socio-economic viewpoint, from the Victorian period to ca.1940. The Mercers estate, developed between 1817 and 1850, and the London Hospital estate, developed between 1799 and 1824, provide examples of what improved management could achieve for working class housing and conditions.
