Article that takes as its point of departure a lecture held in the Students' Circle in Odense (Fyn) in the spring of 1992. Discusses modernity, the modern and modernism, the artist's role and art's role in society with examples from Danish contemporary literature (i.e., the poetry of Søren Ulrik Thomsen) and the graphic arts (i.e., Sys Hindsbo).
