Abstract (en)
Considers whether recent attempts to establish an oeuvre of autograph paintings by Rembrandt--undertaken primarily by the Rembrandt Research Project--are justified in terms of 17th c. Dutch workshop practice and the lack of emphasis on the role of the master as opposed to his students. Shows that as the century progressed, greater interest was given to works by the hand of the master, and potentially non-autograph paintings were considered suspect even though in many cases their style very closely replicated that of the master.
