Close study of the iconography and pictorial structure of the 1939-1940 series of paintings which tell the life story of Harriet Tubman (Hampton, Hampton University Museum). Asserts that through series like this one, Lawrence established himself as the storyteller of the Harlem community in these years, and assumed the responsibility of transmitting the African American experience to all Americans through the use of African American storytelling and written slave narratives.
