Reexamines the ambulatory of the cathedral of S. Paolo in light of recent archaeological investigations which revealed that there were five and not three radial chapels. Establishes a date pre-1090 for the construction, and relates it to the urban expansion of Aversa in the Norman period. Examines the plan in its historical context and in relation to other European buildings of the same typology, mainly in France; indicates particular affinities with Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe; also notes its influence on the plans of other churches in Norman Southern Italy.
