Study of the authorship of the museum's pediment sculptures, Allegory of Nature, previously attributed to Joaquim Machado de Castro. Presents documentary evidence establishing that the sculptures were executed by Antonio Machado after clay and plaster models by Nicolau Vilela; also shows that the architect of the museum, William Elsden, had conceived of a pediment with figures.
