Explication of paintings by Fra Angelico in the monastery of S. Marco (Florence) according to the concepts of dissemblance and figuration and in light of Medieval theology. The reviewer explains the meanings of the two concepts and examines the author's use of them as tools for reading the paintings, and as grounds for a new approach to the relationship between signifier and signified in the visual arts.
