Abstract
(en)
Study of the architecture, sculpture, and iconography of the south and west portals of S. Maria de Belém, the church of the Jerónimos monastery on the outskirts of Lisbon, based on documents in the Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo. Examines the roles of João de Castilho, Diogo de Castilho, André Pilarte, two sculptors named Juan de la Faya, and Machim in the south portal, and that of Nicolau Chantarene in the west portal; and includes charts of records of payment for workmen, 1517-1518. Places the portals in the context of Iberian and European art as well as 16th c. Portuguese architecture and sculpture; also discusses the founding of the monastery and the early stages of its construction; and surveys 19th and 20th c. restorations.
