Abstract
(en)
Examines the use of predetermined images, not literally related to the text, in Italian illuminated manuscripts of the 13th and 14th cs.; focuses on the example of the initials accompanying Psalm 24, "Ad te, Domine, levavi animam meum," in graduals and missals, and on the fact that these commonly contain representations of Christ in majesty; also notes that the figure of David is associated with the representation of the lifting up of the soul in Italian manuscripts beginning in the 13th c. and by the 15th c. is generally present in the "Ad te levavi."
