Abstract (en)
Analyzes the significance of the fact that the illuminator of the mid-9th c. Vivian Bible (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, MS lat. 1) borrowed figures and architectural elements from the 5th c. Vatican Virgil (Roma, Biblioteca vaticana, MS lat. 3225) for the iconography of S. Paul in the frontispiece to the Epistles (fol. 386v). Disputes David Wright's conclusion that the illuminator turned to an antique source because he had to invent the scene of S. Paul preaching, and argues that that he also drew upon medieval illustrations of the life of S. Paul; concludes that the frontispiece is both an original and a copy, in that it is based on the conversion of pre-existing images.
