Discusses two exhibitions of photographs of African Americans at the New Orleans Museum of Art (18 Dec 1983-28 Feb 1994): Songs of My People, African Americans: a Self-Portrait, which presents results of a recent campaign by 50 African-American photographers to record all aspects of contemporary life; and Asserting Equality: a Photographic Legacy of African-American Identity, which includes portraits, 1850-1930, mainly from the museum's own collection.
