Study of Thomson's photographic essay on the poor of London, published 1876-1877, its relation to other depictions of the lower classes (especially Mayhew's London Labour and the London Poor), and reasons for its negative reception. Argues that Thomson's work was undermined by a crisis in the politics of photographic representation that involved realism; considers Thomson's construction of social class, and examines the conflict that emerged as he and Adolphe Smith sought to make their work both truthful and acceptable to a middle class audience.
