Considers variation and disjunction in the articulation of the ideological position of museums past and present, looks at ideologies in (not of) the art museum, and addresses both the evolutionary and the static nature of its value system; also reflects on how founding principles have interacted with later assumptions to affect current program and practice. Discusses the critique of museums and the current cry for value realignment, and makes proposals for a museum of the 1990s.
