Presents 15 examples of English castles, palaces and religious structures with crenellation, dating from 1200 through 1578, examining the archival records as well as the extant buildings themselves, to determine who was granted licenses to crenellate and for what reasons, and to demonstrate that in some cases individuals or communities would fortify structures even without license.
