Papers on contemporary public art from the symposium, Art and Public Spaces: Daring to Dream, organized for Sculpture Chicago by John Hallmark Neff in Aug 1989, as well as related essays and projects, all originally published in Critical inquiry. Focus is on Germany (Beuys, Haacke, the Harburg Monument against Fascism by Jochen and Esther Gerz, and the Aschrott-Brunnen monument in Kassel by Horst Hoheisel) and the United States (Richard Serra's Tilted Arc in New York, and Maya Lin's Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington); also includes projects by Acconci, Denes and Nicholson.
