Reviews a book by artist and sociologist Renate Herter which defies categorization through its unconventional conception and presentation. Its meandering intermingling of text and image constitutes a dialogue with the media of art history in which images of women in traditional western art (represented here by their more familiar postcard images) are subjected to a feminist rereading. At the same time the book incorporates illustrations and documentation of Herter's own works, including installations and collages, in which the approach is similarly based on an interaction with postcard reproductions.
