Offers a history of the ivory horn as it appears in literary sources and as it survives today. Focuses on a carved oliphant in the collection of the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig, dating from the 11th c. and originating in Italy. Discusses the association of oliphants with saints, in particular S. Blasius who was the patron saint of Braunschweig.
