Explores Walter Benjamin's writings on the allegorical works of the French caricaturist and illustrator Grandville, and compares this to his study of allegory in Baudelaire's writings. Shows that Benjamin was especially interested in Grandville's treatment of themes such as fashion and advertising, which represent the increasingly valuable commodity in bourgeois society.
