Studies the prescriptive art criticism of Meyer Schapiro, exemplified by his articles in Art front, against the background of the Communist Party's Popular Front strategy. Finds that Schapiro, whose independence kept him from the collective action and union activities of the Party, made unique contributions to the discourse about the relationship of art to economic and political conditions in the mid-1930s.
