Abstract (en)
Examines Schapiro's role in the meeting between the American Artists' Congress and the Mexican artists from the League of Revolutionary Writers and Artists, New York, 1936; notes American interest in Mexican muralism as a model for public art at a time when the Mexicans were rejecting Rivera and repudiating many of their most important achievements. Analyzes Schapiro's defense of Mexican muralism and his endorsement of the viability of public art in the United States under the New Deal, expressed in his review of Portrait of Mexico, by Rivera and Bertram D. Wolfe (New York, 1937).
