Traces the career of the British photographer active in Melbourne from around 1842. One of Kilburn's specialties in photography was the portrayal of Australian aborigines, which were subsequently copied by artists and illustrators, in particular for William Westgarth's history of the British colony at Port Phillip entitled Australia Felix, published in 1848. Discusses Kilburn's Group of Victorian Aborigines, 1847 (Melbourne, National Gallery of Victoria).
