Studies the style and iconography of the mural painting of the Annunciation with the prophets Moses, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel, in the western apse of the church of al-'Adra' in Dair al-Suryan, lower Egypt. It was discovered after a fire (1988) damaged the mural of ca.1250 which covered it. Discusses the crucial role of late antique Palestinian precedents, 6th-8th cs.; dates the fresco to the 8th or early 9th c.; and concludes that its high quality is cause for a reevaluation of Coptic mural painting.
