Examines the constellations and their varied pictorial forms associated with the months and the signs of the zodiac in medieval calendars. Notes the frequent close connection between such depictions and the iconography of virtue and vice. Explores in particular the association of the seven deadly sins with animals of the zodiac, and discusses this iconography in the context of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Finally reflects on medieval astrological iconography in connection with the survival of antiquity, the scholastic development of memory training, and the theory of archetypes.
