Abstract (en)
Considers The Enigma of Isidore Ducasse, a photographic image of an assemblage created by Man Ray in 1920 which pays tribute to the famous statement of the legendary Comte de Lautréamont (alias Isidore Ducasse): "Beautiful as the chance meeting of a sewing machine and an umbrella on a dissecting-table." The photograph shows a coarse fabric enveloping a vaguely anthropomorphic form tied with rope. Heyd states: "The assumption underlying the present article is that The Enigma of Isidore Ducasse is actually the enigma of Man Ray, or if we wish, the enigma of Emmanuel Radnitsky--the artist's real name. For Man Ray, sharing with Lautréamont the need to conceal his true identity, adopted an anagrammatic pseudonym." This was to avoid classification as an artist with an ethnic (Russian Jewish) identity.
