Abstract
(en)
Discerns the mnemotechnical operations embedded in the complex image structures of medieval stained glass windows. Concentrating on 13th c. examples (e.g., the cathedral of Bourges), demonstrates that they involve memory systems different from the ancient technique of loci. Explores medieval modes of visualization, describing the interactions between processes of mnemonic and pictorial organization. Looking at stained glass, liturgical calendars and calendrical forms of architecture, argues that they do not function simply as aides-memoires, encoding memorable information extrinsic to the image; rather, they must be understood historically in light of the relation between image production and the production of memory.
