Argues that the drawing of a giant with a dwarf (New York, Metropolitan Museum) derives from a traditional scholastic metaphor that expressed the relationship between the generations by means of the image of dwarfs sitting or standing on the shoulders of giants, and thereby gaining a better view. Suggests that therefore the drawing was not made for the collector Niccoló Simonelli, whose name appears on the standard, but may have been made in connection with a scientific book or treatise.
