Abstract (en)
Reexamines the history of Guglielmo della Porta's Tomb of Paul III (Rome, S. Peter's), which, following a complex evolution in design, was executed as a freestanding tomb surmounted by the seated figure of the pope. After della Porta's death it was relocated as a wall tomb. Attempts to identify the respective roles of sculptor and pope in the tomb's original program, and traces its various sites in S. Peter's (some determined by Michelangelo) until its final placement in the apse by Bernini.
