Abstract (en)
Argues that the left-hand figure playing viola da gamba in The Education of Marie de Médicis (Paris, Louvre) is Orpheus rather than Apollo. Notes related prints and drawings by other artists. Associates Orpheus with music as the medium which binds together man, nature, and the cosmos; and defines his role as that of a moral pedagogue encouraging the positive aspects of society and community.
