Busch's title derives from Friedrich Schiller's essay "On naïve and sentimental poetry," in which he argued that the sentimental depends upon an indirect, oblique and reflective experience of the world. For Busch the modern world is characterized by the broken, the fragmentary, the isolated and the incomplete.
