Study of four overdoor paintings of allegories of the estates by Lagrenée, two (The Sword: Bellona Presenting Mars with the Reins of his Horse and The Robe: Justice Disarmed by Innocence and Applauded by Prudence) in the Art Museum, Princeton University, Princeton, two in unknown locations; examines Diderot's critique of the pictures in the Salon of 1767; and discusses the patronage of Mazade de Saint-Bresson, who commissioned the paintings, presumably for the Hôtel Castanier in Paris. Includes a note by the conservator with results of the technical examination of the Princeton pictures.
