Study of Leonardo's intellectual process during the development of the project for the Battle of Anghiari, 1503-1506 (Florence, Palazzo vecchio); reexamines related documents and analyzes Leonardo's aims regarding effects of perspective and color, in light of the notes on color, vision, and painting in Madrid Codex II (Madrid, Biblioteca Nacional, MS 8936) and evidence from the recent conservation treatment of the Last Supper (Milan, S. Maria delle Grazie).
