Abstract
(en)
An account of the political and ideological implications of the iconography of the painting in the Picture Gallery, Christ Church, Oxford University. If, as is generally believed, it was commissioned by Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel as a gift for George Villiers, Marquis of Buckingham, the King's favourite, it takes on an immediately instrumental diplomatic function internal to the Stuart court. Compares Van Dyck's unmilitaristic treatment of the event with Dutch paintings of the same subject matter, and with his own, more militaristic and conventional preliminary sketches.
