Abstract
(en)
Considers correspondences between the idea of a glorious past and the imagery promoted by the leading circles in Sweden. Examines a range of visual imagery including cartography, topographical documentation and the recording of antiquities, as well as aspects of gardening, interior decoration, landscape painting, portraiture, emblematic imagery, and the visual records made of plants and animals. A main theme is the concept of nature, in the widest sense of the word, and the assumption that natural resources offer an important key to the national identity as it manifests itself in the dissemination of visual messages.
