Abstract (en)
Provides a history of the South London Gallery (formerly the South London Art Gallery), intended to provide opportunities for the enjoyment of the arts for a deprived urban public, pioneering the development of museum and gallery education for the whole population. Catalogue essays provide a brief account of the gallery's origins, the role of Frederic Leighton and his circle of artistic friends in its creation, and the philanthropic aims of cultural provision for the population of poor areas of cities in late Victorian Britain. A further essay discusses the aesthetic qualities and ideological functioning of Victorian sentimentality in genre painting. Exhibits of paintings, drawings, prints, decorative arts, and documentary material, represent the collection of the South London Gallery.
