Abstract
(en)
Analyzes the mural painting of a monk, inscribed "Custos Ecclesiae," discovered during excavations at the church of S. Michele Arcangelo in Monte Sant'Angelo in the early 1950s. Refutes a previous proposal that it represents S. Michael the Archangel, and suggests that it is a portrait of Pope Leo IX, who had been a monk before his election as a bishop.
