Abstract (en)
Analyzes sources for Aby Warburg's early thought on the dichotomies in 15th c. Renaissance culture and art. Suggests that Alexis François Rio's concept of the Renaissance "oscillation" between the cult of Antiquity and Christian values anticipates Warburg's expression of the same idea. Finds that Warburg's concept of "paganity" gradually came to have more in common with Nietzsche than with Rio, and that Warburg eventually abandoned reductive views of the Renaissance.
