Discusses the iconography and placement of two Roman capitals with carved trophies in the Early Christian basilica of S. Lorenzo fuori le Mura, Rome. Argues that they were intentionally chosen for reuse as part of the program of decoration over the tomb of S. Lawrence, to symbolize the victory of Christ. Notes Medieval capitals with the same iconography in the 12th c. crypt of S. Michele in Pavia, where the Lombard kings were crowned.
