Abstract (en)
Discusses Terbrugghen's Crucifixion with the Madonna and S. John in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the version in Turin, Galleria Giorgio Caretto, and the workshop version in Nes on Ameland, S. Clemens. Argues that the figures repeat those of an anonymous painting, here dated ca.1624, of the Crucifixion with the Madonna, S. John and members of the Ploos family (Utrecht, Centraal Museum), which in itself is a copy of a lost 16th c. original. The painting in Utrecht was commissioned by Adriaen Ploos to support his claims to a noble birth; he may have commissioned the Crucifixion in New York as well.
