Abstract (en)

Discusses the Venturi firm's use of historical reference and their efforts to emulate the facade of the original National Gallery building in their extension, the Sainsbury Wing. Compares the wing to a range of other recent museum buildings and extensions, presents some of the criticism of the structure, and considers its relation to Venturi's project for the Museum für Kunsthandwerk, Frankfurt (1979). Also comments on the influence of Venturi's training at Princeton on the evolution of his postmodern style.
