Abstract (en)

Traces the influence of German avant-garde film on the Russian cinema in the 1920s, when foreign films were again imported into the Soviet Union. Discusses the competing interest in American and German cinema in the Soviet film world, showing that although so-called "American editing" was adopted and soon evolved into a characteristically Russian form of montage, there remained a significant undercurrent of German expressionist influence.
