Discusses the creation of a "Hebrew environment" and a "Hebrew style" by Boris Schatz at the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts in Jerusalem, which he founded in 1906. Examines the use of models from Jewish art, archaeology, and collections of flora and fauna of Eretz Israel, as well as the Hebrew Bible and alphabet--as bases for student designs; and questions the lasting effects of such a self-imposed national style.
