Surveys African American art history and historiography in the 20th c.; discusses approaches, limitations and problems; comments on significant texts; and deplores the present stagnant state of scholarship, ascribing it in part to the influence of Alain Locke and the formalist approach that he adopted to legitimize African American art. Calls for constructive action to restore urgency and viability to African American art scholarship. Includes a selected bibliography.
