Abstract (en)

Study of the main portal of S. Francisco, Lima, designed by Constantino de Vasconcelos, ca.1657, and executed by his assistant Manuel de Escobar, 1672-1674; places it in the context of architectural developments in Cuxco and Lima in the mid-17th c.; and examines the significance of the iconography of the polychrome wooden sculptures on the portal of S. Francisco, representing the Immaculate Conception between SS. Francis and Dominic. Notes the recurrence of this iconography in the interior, and argues that the portal was conceived as a transparency or preview of the main altar.
