Study of Benjamin's non-existent text on mass culture in the late 19th and early 20th cs., based on his notes, 1927-1940, published in 1982 as Das Passagen-Werk. The central image is the 19th c. arcades of Paris, which Benjamin perceived as "the precise material replica of the internal consciousness...the unconscious of the dreaming collective." The reviewer comments on Benjamin's accommodation of his Messianism to Marxism and the author's interpretation of this.
