Interprets a series of three paintings, 1980-1981, by the American artist, entitled Tantric Detail I, II and III in light of the the influence of choreographer Merce Cunningham, composer John Cage, the art of Picasso and Duchamp, and Johns's understanding of the beliefs of Tantric Buddhism. Sees the paintings as images dealing with death, and argues that they are a "manifestation of a religious conversion that permits the artist to survive and to grow by embracing his own mortal fallibility".
